Smartphone And TV: How To Connect Them? Our Practical Guide

What could be preferable over watching recordings from your cell phone straightforwardly on your TV? A convenient component for offering recollections to companions or getting a charge out of HD. However, at that point, how to show a cell phone screen on a television? Wi-Fi, HDMI link, applications, Web administrators… the various techniques. Outline of arrangements.

Connect Your Smartphone And Your TV Using Wi-Fi

With the Wi-Fi association, it is feasible to interface your associated objects to your cell phone, like your TV. You have three choices, contingent upon whether you have an iPhone or Android.

Google Chromecast

Created by Google, Chromecast comes as an HDMI dongle. A little gadget should be connected to the television to emerge the association between the cell phone and the TV. This innovation works with Android telephones and tablets, iPhones and iPads running iOS, and PCs with Windows or macOS working frameworks. To benefit from this solution, you must:

  1. Check that your devices meet the minimum system requirements.
  2. Buy a Chromecast dongle (unless Google Cast is already built into your smart TV).
  3. Connect the key to the HDMI port of your television.
  4. Connect your Chromecast and your smartphone to the same Wi-Fi network.
  5. Pull down your smartphone’s notification panel, then click “broadcast” or “cast”.

Thus, you are in mirror mode: your mobile content is projected on the big screen! You can also go to one of the Chromecast-enabled apps, such as Netflix or YouTube, and click the Cast icon.

Apple AirPlay

After Google, place the solution dedicated to Apple devices: AirPlay or AirPlay 2. The operation is similar to Chromecast, except you need not buy an external device.  However, it would help to have an Apple TV or a television compatible with AirPlay 2. Also, check that your iPhone has iOS 12.3 or later to stream video content to your TV.  Once these prerequisites have been validated, connect your iPhone and smart TV to the same Wi-Fi network. Then, all that remains is to click on the icon representing a television screen from the iPhone’s shortcut menu or a compatible application. It’s that simple!

Miracast Over Wi-Fi Direct

This technology created by the Wi-Fi Alliance consortium (holder of the Wi-Fi brand) makes it possible to broadcast the smartphone screen on a TV connected via Wi-Fi Direct. This means that the connection occurs directly between the two devices without needing a Wi-Fi router. Like with Chromecast, you must have a television equipped with this feature or invest in a Miracast dongle. Note that there is no compatibility between Miracast and Apple.

Display A Smartphone Screen On A TV Using An HDMI Cable

Need a Wi-Fi connection available, or prefer to use a good old cable to cast your mobile content on the big screen? Find out which wired method to use.

USB-C

More and more Android smartphones today are equipped with a USB Type-C port. If this is the case with your mobile phone, you will need a USB-C – HDMI cable to connect it to your TV. Provided, however, that the smartphone has DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

MHL Technology

Mobile High-definition Link in English, the MHL standard allows connecting Android phones with micro-USB or mini-USB ports and televisions. An interesting solution for older smartphones with this type of connector. In case of hardware incompatible with the MHL interface, you will need to purchase an MHL – HDMI adapter.  Our advice: consult the MHL consortium list to check your devices’ compatibility with the MHL connection. Convenient!

Apple’s Lightning Cable

The Lightning to HDMI cable is intended for iPhone laptop users. Indeed, as usual, Apple offers a unique type of connector specific to its products. You will be forced to use this specific cable if you plan to watch your videos on television from your iPhone using a wired connection.

Stream Content From Your Phone To TV Using Apps

Some manufacturers offer the possibility of casting audio and video content on the TV from their mobile. This is, for example, the case of Samsung and Xiaomi.

Smart View: Samsung’s App

Normally installed on Galaxy smartphones, the app is available for download from the Google Play Store and is compatible with Samsung TVs built between 2011 and 2016.  Then, setting up is very quick: open the smartphone shortcuts panel and click “Smart View” to activate screen transfer. Easy.

Xiaomi’s MIUI Interface

The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has a feature integrated into its MIUI interface.  Here is how to activate it:

  1. Open your Xiaomi smartphone settings.
  2. Tap on “connect and share”.
  3. Click on “broadcast”.
  4. Activate the option “cast screen contents to an external monitor”.

Before that, activate the mirror mode on your TV so your mobile recognizes it.

The Castro App

Finally, be aware that there are third-party applications to display your smartphone screen on a TV without going through an HDMI cable. This is the case of Castro, one of the best in the field for instantly streaming movies on the big screen or in photos. The Castro app for Android is available for free on Google Play Store.

Cast Your Mobile Screen On A Smart TV Thanks To Internet Operators

The last option for projecting your mobile content to a smart TV is to look into internet carriers.  Some Wi-Fi routers integrate screen mirroring solutions, such as the Livebox Play decoder from Orange or the Bbox Miami or Bbox 4K TV from Bouygues Télécom.

Protect Your Smartphone Daily

By acting as a remote control for the TV, your smartphone faces an additional risk of breakage. Consider purchasing portable device insurance for all of your devices. Or you can also subscribe to our mobile insurance if you only want to insure your mobile.
